Reviewing the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) helps determine liquid characteristics and recommended safety practices. Accidents and fire risks can be minimized by using proper safety equipment. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is specific on what is required of a safety can in order for it to perform as expected under fire conditions. The basic purpose of a safety can is to control flammable vapors while providing a convenient means of carrying, dispensing and storing up to five gallons of flammable liquid.
NFPA Code 30 1.6.40 and OSHA 1910.106(a)(29) define a safety can as "A listed (approved) container, of not more than 5 Gal/18.9L capacity, having a spring-closing lid and spout cover and so designed that it will safely relieve internal pressure when subjected to fire exposure."
A safety can is designed to specifically eliminate one or more of the three basic elements that must be present simultaneously to support a fire: heat, fuel, oxygen.
Effective control of any one of these elements with a properly designed safety can eliminate the chance of fire.
- Heat could be from sources such as mechanical sparks, static electricity, frayed wiring, a lit match or cigarette smoking, or a portable heater. Heat is effectively controlled with a dual-density flame arrester and self-closing, leaktight lid.
-
Fuel can be a combustible or flammable liquid such as gasoline. A leaktight, gasketed lid ensures that outside heat sources and oxygen cannot get in and the flammable vapors and fuel remain inside. When the can is not being used, the spring-loaded, self-closing lid automatically shuts. A gasket on the lid helps keep it airtight and leaktight.
-
Oxygen is always present in the air we breathe. Again, the leaktight, gasketed, self-closing lid keeps oxygen away from the fuel and flammable vapors.
As an added measure of protection, safety cans offer positive pressure relief, meaning they automatically vent at between 3 and 5 psig. This is important to prevent rupture (or explosion) in the event of a fire.
Type I Safety Cans
Compliant Type I safety cans are designed with a single spout for filling and pouring. The self-closing, leak-proof lid provides security from spills and leaks.
Compliant Type II steel safety cans offer additional convenience with two openings at the top. One opening is equipped with a flexible metal hose for smooth, accurate pouring into small apertures and to provide a bonding path to a receiving vessel. A second opening, positioned behind the handle, is used for filling.
Color Choices
Both type I and type II safety cans are available in a variety of colors suitable for flammable liquid storage. Red is the most widely used (and OSHA-accepted) choice for flammable liquids. Blue is frequently used for storing kerosene. Yellow cans can be used for storing diesel fuel. Green cans are often used for storing oils.
OSHA-compliant oily waste cans are essential whenever solvent cloths and wiping rags are used. Rags and cloths soaked with solvents, thinners, linseed oil, combustible adhesives and other flammable liquids present a serious fire risk when improperly discarded. On Justrite oily waste cans, the specially designed lid opens no more than 60 degrees and stays closed when not in use, isolating contents from fire sources and limiting oxygen so spontaneous combustion risk is virtually eliminated. Round construction and an elevated bottom encourage circulation of air around the can to dispense heat and reduce moisture buildup and rusting. One can choose from a variety of sizes in either red or yellow, or both when color identification is desired to help segregate materials or to differentiate department location sites. All feature galvanized steel body construction with a durable powder paint finish. Popular foot-operated models leave hands free (cover snaps shut when pedal is released). Most sizes are also offered with a hand-operated cover if preferred.
All of the Justrite safety cans and oily waste cans undergo rigorous testing requirements by independent third-party agencies and have received certification from Factory Mutual (FM Approved) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL and ULC Listed). Additionally, Justrite offers an exclusive ten-year warranty on all their safety and oily waste cans.
